What's in store for Spring?

This one’s for me to chat a bit about Spring’s trends and mainly to think about which ones you’re likely to already have in your wardrobe, or which might be worth a spot there… We all know trends come and go regularly and if we always switched the whole wardrobe up it would be a. really expensive and b. really unsustainable - and when we’re all becoming more conscious of our impact on the environment, not to mention conscious of the cost of living, it makes sense to try to incorporate plenty of what you’ve already got!
And actually by definition a trend is just a trend, it won’t last forever, whereas your own style will, so for me it’s all about using the trends to guide you, giving them a nod, whilst staying true to the clothes that you feel good in. So, before you rush out to the shops, have a look through your existing clothes to see what you’ve got. I’ve tried to pull out some of what’s around this season, that I think will give a nod to trends, but work hard in your wardrobe:

Maxi dresses… There’s a shape for everyone, they’re SUPER easy (one piece and your outfit is pretty much sorted!) and the styles around at the moment are really comfortable. Not to mention cool when it gets hotter, yet still with a bit of cover for those of us who aren’t so keen on getting their legs out in summer (who knows, you may even have a couple that have been working hard all winter with a few added layers). Whether you like feminine floral prints, geometric designs, (my favourite) animal print, or block colour you’re sure to find a look that you love.

In contrast, the mini skirt / dress is also back around this season. If you like your legs, then show them off! I’m a strong believer in wearing what makes you feel good about yourself, and I don’t agree with there being a cut off point for when you can wear short skirts! If you’d rather keep a bit more covered up, you can be sure the British weather will offer up many chances for teaming the mini with tights - even over the Spring and Summer!

The biker jacket… a great way to give an outfit a little bit of an edge, you’ll always look a bit of a rock chick with one of these on! Personally it took me a long while to get my head around a leather jacket, but since I have, I love mine! Match it with some of the above - a floaty, feminine dress and boots, or a pleated maxi-skirt, t-shirt and trainers.
And let’s talk about the pleated skirt… another firm favourite that’s working hard again this year. Dress up or down, go block colour or pattern. Like the maxi dress, they’re floaty and cool for a warm day, give that touch of femininity and also have that bit of cover for those who don’t want to bear all.

There’s been many a nod towards the fact that most of us will be returning to a more office based way of life, however, as with our approach to work wear over the past couple of years, designs have stuck with this more relaxed, smart-casual idea. Blazers and shirts will still be seen around lots this season, and the relaxed look is still going strong.

The other much debated trend that’s back in shops is the low rise waist jean / trouser - I’m not going to lie to you, I am delighted at this because a lower rise suits my body shape. I am not sure I’ll be pushing it quite as far as the crop top with low rise (which seems to be the way it’s being styled), but I am pleased nonetheless! A relaxed leg for jeans is still very much around - look out for wide legs, straight legs, boot cut and flares. And don’t worry, there are still tons of mid and higher rise still around. Essentially, there should still be a fit to suit you. And my advice with jeans anyway is that you should wear what suits you rather than what’s ‘on trend’!
Colours to look out for… brights are still making an impact! Loads of orange and pink matching; bright greens, lilacs and cobalt blues. Adding colour is a fabulous way to give your outfit a little spring / summer lift, and a pop of colour can really lift your mood (just like the sun shine does when it comes out!) Dramatic and Creative style personalities will especially love this one.
On the flip side, there seems to be a lot of white around - plenty of all-white even! It can feel a little brave, and it’s probably not something I’ll be trying out myself all that often, however, if white is your thing then go for it!
Hopefully this has given you a few ideas, and will send you off to have a look in your wardrobe about what outfits you can already put together, and also how you can inject a little Spring / Summer 22 update into your existing wardrobe.
Whatever you find, have fun, and remember that if it makes you feel good, then wear it!
